Assertiveness Skills

Corporate business team and manager in a meeting

Duration 1-2 day workshop

Overview

Being able to communicate effectively – openly and honestly – is a key skill in any relationship. Assertiveness is one of the most powerful communication tools for enabling a healthy, mutual exchange of ideas, thoughts and opinions.

Have you ever heard the expression ‘What you say – your message – is just as important as how you say it?’ Assertiveness can help you learn how to express a point of view so that it is both heard and understood, in a way that shows respect for the beliefs of others, without coming across as aggressive or confrontational.

Being assertive is about being direct but without being overbearing. It shows confidence and self-assuredness, and learning the art of this style of communication can be powerful for managers and leaders, but it is also beneficial in all relationships, both professional and personal.

As published by the world renowned Mayo Clinic, assertive communication comes from learning the skills required to be diplomatic, and it can be extremely helpful in managing emotive situations and to diffuse conflict.

Benefits of learning assertiveness are:

  • Gain self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Understand, recognise and manage your emotions
  • Healthier communication style
  • Breaks the victim and bully cycle
  • Create win-win situations
  • Recognise and facilitate difficult emotions in others
  • Earn the respect of others
  • Build honest relationships
  • Increased job satisfaction
  • Use assertiveness to work through conflict
  • Improved decision-making skills
  • It’s a powerful stress management strategy.

    GLASS ROCK CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

“Just wanted to thank you again for an interesting day yesterday.  I wasn’t looking forward to it as I assumed it would be the usual dry and dusty approach of legal jargon, documentation and dotting the i’s, and crossing the t’s.  Instead it was something different and more aligned with what vendor management can be (and covering areas Boral ICT are seriously challenged with at the moment).”
