Experts in Change Adoption and Training
Duration: Half a day – 1 day
Overview
Hilary Clinton once said: “It is important to learn how to take criticism seriously but not personally.”
It’s excellent advice. But easier to hear than to act upon. When we need to deliver negative feedback, or critical feedback either in our professional or personal relationships, we need to be acutely aware of how that message is going to be perceived by the other person. If it’s delivered the wrong way, we can hurt someone’s feelings or spark an argument and then the situation becomes harder to resolve.
It’s important to realise three things:
That’s why, when we need to deliver critical or negative feedback to another person, we need to be direct, to focus only on the current issues, and to ensure that the feedback we are providing is ‘focused on a situation’, relating to performance or behaviour in a specific situation, and not the person as a whole.
When this way of providing feedback is mastered, it can transform relationships, paving the way for more honesty, deeper understanding and growth.
In this course, participants will learn ways to make sure that critical feedback is delivered respectfully, and also focuses on how the issue can be improved, how to avoid conflict, minimise misunderstandings and that the person has suggestions and ideas they can take on board for learning and improvement.
